California Chrome (USA) – He was the penultimate horse drawn and trainer Art Sherman picked stall 11. Sherman said: “The outside draw is good if you’ve got the horse and I hope we have.
“There wasn’t too much I could do about the draw. He’s got tactical speed so I’m not going to worry about it.”
Candy Boy (USA) - The fourth horse out with trainer Doug Watson opting for stall 6.
“I went for six as it’s in the middle of the racecourse. I’m hopeful it will give us a good position. He doesn’t show a lot of speed out the gates so I didn’t want to be on the inside and bang in the centre seemed a good place to be,” said Watson.
Frosted (USA) – The fifth horse drawn with Jimmy Bell, President of Darley USA, selecting stall 9.
Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said: “We were hoping to be outside of the speed. Special Fighter is speed as is California Chrome (who later drew post 11). We didn’t want to go all the way outside. There’s a long run into the first turn which should help us secure position.”
Gun Pit (AUS) – The first horse picked and trainer Caspar Fownes selected stall 3.
“He drew the inside when he ran second on Super Saturday. We were the first name called out today and we’re delighted to put him in barrier three. He will be handy,” said Fownes.
“We’re looking forward to Saturday night. I can think he can run a very respectable race from three.”
Hokko Tarumae (JPN) – The third horse picked out. Trainer Katsuichi Nishura chose stall 8 and said: “We’re glad to come back here. Number eight is a lucky number. From that post we can break to see what the other horses are doing and position ourselves accordingly.”
Hoppertunity (USA) – The ninth horse out. Dana Barnes, assistant to Bob Baffert, picked stall 10 and said: “That was really our only choice – one or ten and so we had to pick outside.”
Keen Ice (USA) – The 10th horse out. Jerry Crawford of owners Donegal Racing picked stall 1. He said: ”The thing that made it (choosing the rail) attractive was that it was that or the 11 or the 12. We have speed drawn to our immediate inside in the two-hole (Mshawish), so we should have room to manoeuvre and navigate from there. We are going to be first time blinkers so I think that will make him a little keener, excuse the expression.”
Mshawish (USA) – Came out second, and Al Shaqab Racing’s US manager Bradley Weisbord selected stall 2.
Trainer Todd Pletcher said: ”The track is good on the inside and with our horse’s experience we know he doesn’t mind being inside. We talked to Frankie earlier and his choices were – in order – two, three, four, five, six and one so why not go with his first choice? Hopefully we’ll be in a good stalking position – that would be ideal.”
Mubtaahij (USA) – The seventh horse out. Trainer Mike De Kock’s son Matthew selected stall 4. He said: “We didn’t want to be one but wanted to be on the inside as there has tended to be inside bias through the season. The horse is peaking at the right time and should give a good account of himself.”
Special Fighter (IRE) – The sixth horse out and trainer Musabah Al Muhairi picked stall 5. “He’s surprised everybody because he has done so well this season. I hope he will do a good job in the big race,” said Muhairi.
“I would have liked to be drawn six because that’s where he was when he won the Maktoum Challenge but that had gone so I’m very happy with draw five.”
Teletext (USA) – The last horse picked. The owner’s racing manager Saad bin Mishrif was left with stall 12. “I had no choice. I was last to draw so had to take number 12. Had I had a choice I would have gone for six in the middle,” said bin Mishrif.
Vadamos (FR) – The eighth horse out, stable representative Alexandre Olive picked stall 7. “We’re very happy with the draw. We wanted to be in the middle,” said Olive. “I think he’ll be alright on the dirt as he was second to Solow on the sand at Chantilly so there shouldn’t be a problem.”
The draw for the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest race took place at Meydan Racecourse today.

MCLAUGHLIN MARKING UP HIS OPTIONS

One of the top qualities of a good trainer is their ability to understand the talents of their horses and place them where they have the best chance of success.
At the beginning of the Dubai World Cup Carnival, Team McLaughlin had three horses with comparable abilities, all proven to be effective between 1200 to 1600m on dirt, in Confrontation (USA), Marking (USA) and Watershed (USA).
Confrontation won the Firebreak Stakes Sponsored By EGA over 1600m on February 4 and Marking won the Al Naboodah National Plant Trophy three weeks later over the shorter 1200m distance, but when it was time to enter for Dubai World Cup Night, their roles were reversed.
“We’ve always kind of had the Godolphin Mile (sponsored by Meydan Sobha) in mind for Marking,” assistant trainer Neal McLaughlin said. “He’s by Bernardini, so we think he’ll be really good at 1800m or even 2000m later in the year back in the States. He reminds us a lot of Key of Luck, who won the here in 1996 by 20 lengths. They’re both fast but can carry their speed.”
“Marking has had some gate issues and in a sprint against a high calibre speed horse like (likely Golden Shaheen favourite X Y Jet) you can’t give an inch,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin added. “In a 1600m race, if he does miss a beat at the start, he can recover and get in position without the mistake being nearly as costly.”
“We would prefer an outside trip with Marking,” Neal McLaughlin said. “With a one-turn mile, there’s a long run down the backstretch. He has a high cruising speed so we’d like to be on the lead or close to it. He doesn’t love kickback. We’d like to run with a clean face.”
As for Confrontation in the Dubai Golden Shaheen sponsored by Gulf News the assistant reported: “If you look back, some of his best form is sprinting.
“We have Marking for the Mile. We could have run Confrontation there too but we want to give Sheikh Mohamed separate rooting interests on Dubai World Cup Night. He has the speed to stay close and a short burst that makes him dangerous in sprints, if you time it right. He’s an interesting horse in good form and we think we have him in the optimum spot.”
“We like Confrontation on the cutback, especially if other horses can keep X Y Jet honest, ” Kiaran McLaughlin added, “We know our horse will be running strongly at the end.”
The third wheel in the McLaughlin sprint machine, Watershed, failed to win in two starts at the Dubai World Cup Carnival, finishing a late closing third behind stablemate Confrontation in the Firebreak over 1600m before crossing the line sixth in Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 at 2000m.
“He’s a deep closer, which hasn’t been the right style at Meydan this season and since we had two others that fit better, we thought it was best to save him for American racing,” Neil McLaughlin explained.
Will Team McLaughlin’s evaluations and subsequent race placing decisions pay off on Dubai World Cup Night? Only time will tell.

California Chrome Draws Wide for World Cup
California Chrome drew wide for his March 26 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) quest, a bid to go one better after running second in 2015. But if trainer Art Sherman is bothered by post 11 in a field of 12, he’s not letting it show.
“Listen, the outside is good, if you’ve got the horse, and I hope we do,” Sherman said March 23, as he and other connections of the 2014 Horse of the Year waited until second-last to see their runner’s name drawn for post position selection for the $10 million Dubai World Cup. “There wasn’t too much I could do about the draw. He’s got tactical speed, so I’m not going to worry about it.”
Grade I winners Frosted, Mshawish, Hoppertunity, and Keen Ice join the charismatic chestnut in representing the U.S. in the 21st edition of the World Cup. Last year California Chrome broke from post 9 and was beaten 2 3/4 lengths by Prince Bishop.
“We lost ground on every turn. He had to lose maybe three or four lengths in the race,” Sherman said of the 2015 running. “Being a former jockey, I know that saving ground means a lot. He was on a five-horse spread, they were bumping each other. If (this race) is a little bit smoother, I think he’ll run really well.”
Frosted’s connections selected the 9 hole, Mshawish’s chose post 2, Hoppertunity was left with post 10, and Keen Ice will break from the rail—a location owner Jerry Crawford selected rather than going outside with the closing colt, who will have first-time blinkers in Saturday’s running. A field of 12 lines up for the 2,000-meter (about 1 1/4 miles) test, where contenders from the United Arab Emirates, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, and Japan are also set to challenge.
Regular rider Victor Espinoza will be aboard California Chrome for the race, which goes with a post time of 1 p.m. EDT (9 p.m. local time).
“I’d rather be outside than in the one hole,” Espinoza said. “We all know the one hole is the short way around, but it’s a lot of horses, a big field, and for that reason, it’s OK. I think 11 is good.”
Espinoza said, despite memories fans may have of California Chrome preferring to run outside, the long-striding horse has matured.
“That was before, in his early races, when he was a young horse, a 3-year-old,” he remarked. “Now, he’s getting older. He’s just more professional, more agressive. Kind of like he’s not afraid any more, like he used to be. For some reason, he used to be a little bit afraid inside, on the rail. But I rode him a month ago over here, and I was stuck inside, and it seems like it was not a problem. Now that I have the 11, I think I just have to go with the flow.”
SHULMAN: Chrome ‘Perfect’ for World Cup
Both California Chrome and Frosted won their respective prep races in Dubai—California Chrome impressively taking a Feb. 25 handicap and Frosted winning the Feb. 4 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 Sponsored by EGA (UAE-II) with equal ease.

“We want to be out in the clear and didn’t want to be down inside too much, so we’re happy where we are,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said of Frosted’s post position. “William can work out a trip; there’s a long run from the start to the turn. He’s going to be forwardly placed… with California Chrome outside, we’ll just have to see what happens.”
Keen Ice looks to rebound from a disappointing seventh in the March 5 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 Sponsored by Emirates (UAE-I). That race was won by Special Fighter, who collected the first graded victory of his career and bounced back from a sixth-place effort in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2, where he was 12 lengths behind Frosted. Hong Kong-based Gun Pit finished second by 4 1/2 lengths in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3, while Mubtaahij also contested the March 5 test, where he ran fourth for South African trainer Mike de Kock.
ANGST: Special Fighter Upsets, Keen Ice Fades in UAE
While five Dubai World Cup entrants are U.S.-bred and based, two others were also bred in America; Saudi Arabia’s Teletext, and Candy Boy, who now represents the UAE.
Japan’s group I winner Hokko Tarumae and French-based group II winner Vadamos complete the field.
The Dubai World Cup airs on TVG, with a broadcast beginning at 9 a.m. EDT.

Dubaï World Cup : California Chrome encore à l’extérieur
Samedi à Meydan se dispute la grande réunion de la Dubaï World Cup. Ce mercredi avait lieu le tirage au sort des places à la corde pour la course la plus richement dotée au monde, et le favori California Chrome n’a pas eu de chance au tirage…
California Chrome deuxième de l’édition 2015 de la World Cup (avec le 9 à la corde sur 9 partants) n’a pas été plus gâté cette année par le tirage. En effet le champion américain, favori à 6/4 chez les bookmakers, s’élancera samedi de la stalle 11 (sur 12 partants). Battu l’an passé par Prince Bishop,California Chrome est cette saison bien plus fort qu’en 2015 a déclaré son entraîneur Art Sherman qui pense que son représentant a les moyens de s’imposer.
Son principal adversaire, « l’américain Godolphin » Frosted partira quant à lui de la stalle 9 tandis le seul représentant français Vadamos s’élancera de la corde 7.
Côté jockey, Christophe Soumillon a hérité d’un bon numéro, le 4, avec Mubtaahij pensionnaire de Mike de Kock, Vincent Cheminaud sera le partenaire de Vadamos (7) et Flavien Prat lui partira à l’extérieur, stalle 10 avec l’américain Hoppertunity.
