Orange bears fruit again in thrilling renewal
Report: Goodwood, Thursday, Qatar Goodwood Cup (Group 2) 2m, 3yo+
BIG ORANGE, the Princess of Wales’s winner, followed up that Group 2 success to bag another here in what was a thrilling three-way finish between Michael Bell’s four-year-old, 9-2 favourite Quest For More, and the Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris.

Having won a Listed race at Ascot last October, Big Orangewas initially struggling in Pattern company this season but he has definitely found his niche over a longer distance here, scoring at odds of 6-1.
Paddy Power were quoting the winner at 25-1 for the Emirates Melbourne Cup after this victory.
The Duke Of Marmalade gelding was a 25-1 winner in the Princess of Wales’s, seemingly improving for the first-time cheekpieces, and the headgear worked the oracle once more as Big Orange, under a fine ride from Jamie Spencer, clung on by a neck from Northumberland Plate winner Quest For More, who in turn just held off Trip To Paris by a short head for second.
Amazing improvement
The third home was continuing his amazing improvement this term and it was an especially fine effort from him in that he was giving the rest of the field upwards of 4lb.
“It was a fantastic race to be involved with and all three of those horses at the finish deserve great credit, especially Trip To Paris with his penalty,” said Bell.
“This is an absolute star this horse. He’s so genuine and a pleasure to train and I can’t sing his praises high enough. He was officially the highest-rated horse in the race so if he stayed he could win it. It was a very good ride on a very good horse.”
Heading down under
And now a trip to Australia could be very much on the cards for Big Orange with his stamina proven.
“I think the Melbourne Cup is very much the plan,” said Bell. “He stays two miles and has the boot for a mile and a half so he ticks a lot of the boxes for the race.”
Big Orange could be joined at Flemington by Trip To Paris, according to his trainer Ed Dunlop.
“The owners are very keen to go for the Melbourne Cup and it’ll be interesting to see what weight Michael’s horse gets. Whether it’s a year too soon we’ll see though,” he said.
