Golden Horn on the drift with rain set to hit Ascot

GOLDEN HORN was on Thursday eased to a best-priced 8-13 (from 1-2) by Paddy Power for Saturday’s Qipco-backed King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, with the bookmaker believing his stamina could be stretched to the limit if the top end of the forecast rain materialises.

The Met Office have issued a weather warning for the Ascot area, and Golden Horn’s trainer John Gosden acknowledged that the rain that is due to fall for most of Friday, and into Saturday, has the potential to change the complexion of Britain’s midsummer showpiece, this year worth £1.15 million.

Paddy Power, for his firm, said: “There looks to be some real Irish weather hitting Ascot and, while Golden Horn proved the concerns about a mile and a half to be unfounded in the Derby, we’d be extremely concerned about him getting it on easy ground.”

Gosden said: “We’re in the lap of the rain gods, and the last time I looked the forecast was for a great deal more than we were originally expecting. 

“Until we know what rainfall they get and how the ground is it’s hard to make any predictions. The key thing is they’re all in very good order.

“With regards to Golden Horn, it’s hard to say [how soft ground would affect him]. He won his maiden on the easy side of good, but since then he’s seen nothing but really fast ground. He hasn’t raced on it, so we’ll have a walk of the track and see how it looks for him.”

This season’s leading trainer is also due to saddle Eagle Top, who would prefer the rain to stay away, and Romsdal, who conversely would not mind some ease in the ground.

The going at Ascot was on Thursday night good to firm, good in places, but the Met Office’s weather warning for the area begins two hours before Friday’s meeting starts.

Spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said: “We have a weather warning for the Ascot area from midday, due to wind and rain. There’s a high chance the rain could start a lot earlier, but it doesn’t get heavy enough to activate the warning until lunchtime.

“There’s a low pressure system that will be moving over the UK that could potentially result in heavy rain. We’re talking in the region of 20mm, though we expect isolated pockets in the area where as much as 60mm could fall. The warning is in place until 9am on Saturday, although we expect things to begin to ease in the early hours.”

Ad Ascot piove. Ma non in modo tale da poter condizionare il terreno nei prossimi giorni che si prevede possa essere buono. Massima cautela comunque nelle parole del Clerk of the course di Ascot Chris Stickels il quale ha comunque preso tempo prima di dare una visione definitva su quello che sarà il terreno. Ora le news che riguardano queste King George. Lo schieramento si è finalmente completato e saranno in 10 al via della corsa dei diamanti. Il ballo delle monte ha visto alla fine Richard Hughes in sella ad Eagle Top, controfavorito attuale della corsa. Il figlio di Pivotal avrà l’opportunità di regalare un altro G1 ad un fantino che fra un paio di settimane toglierà definitivamente gli stivaletti da fantino e vestirà i panni da allenatore. I Juddmonte saranno 2: su Snow Sky, allenato da Sir Michael Stoute, ci sarà Pat Smuller che in questo periodo sta volando. Su Flintshire (Dansili), allenato da Andre Fabre, ci sarà curiosità nel vedere in sella in Inghilterra Vincent Cheminaud, vera rivelazione della stagione prodotto dell’intuito dell’allenatore francese. Andrea Atzeni ha pescato la sella di Postponed (Dubawi) per Luca Cumani che ha pensato al fantino italiano per rimpiazzare Adam Kirby. William Buick alla fine monterà Romsdal (Halling), la terza scelta di Gosden, ma portacolori Godolphin per il quale “strategos” ha un remunerativo contratto. In tutto questo sono stati sorteggiati gli steccati ed il campo sarà così composto, tra parentesi il numero di corda:

La curiosità ora è rappresentata dallo schema tattico: Nelle Harwicke Snow Sky ha vinto andando in avanti ma senza una grossa andatura. E stessa cosa ha fatto Golden Horn nelle Eclipse di Sandown. Può venire ancora una volta una corsa del genere e questo non giova certamente a Dylan Mouth il quale, invece, necessiterebbe di maggiore andatura. Nei giorni scorsi Stefano ha parlato di un Dylan Mouth che in caso di scarsa andatura andrà in avanti a cercare di costruirsi una corsa già di per se molto difficile. La sua quota, da 25/1 di ieri, è salita a 33/1.

 

Un pò di storia degli italiani ad Ascot: Solo un cavallo allenato in Italia ha vinto le King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored by QIPCO). Fu il leggendario Ribot che nel 1956 inflisse 5 lunghezze a High Veldt e Todrai con Enrico Camici in sella per Ugo Penco (nella foto a lato). Era l’unica volta nella quale l’imbattuto campione italiano ha calcato il suolo inglese durante la sua carriera fatta di 16 affermazioni. IL VIDEO DELLA CORSA QUI.

 

Dopo di lui tra i cavalli allenati in Italia ci hanno provato Tony Bin, un Arc winner, che nel 1987 arrivò quinto, mentre nel 1988 finì terzo di Mtoto, poi ribaltato nell’Arc dello stesso anno, e successivamente il grigio Tisserand, settimo nel 1989 nell’edizione vinta da Nashwan. Gli italiani ricordano questa corsa soprattutto per l’edizione 1975 con Grundy, per i colori di Carlo Vittadini diede vita a quella che The Observer considera come “The race of the century”, con il duello al cardiopalma contro Bustino. IL VIDEO DELLA CORSA QUI. Ma Grundy era allenato in Inghilterra, così come quando il tentativo lo fece Falbrav in quel periodo nelle mani di Luca Cumani, e finì quinto di Alamshar.

 

A distanza di 60 anni circa, Dylan Mouth cercherà di diventare il secondo italiano allenato nella penisola a vincere questa corsa. Difficile è difficile, gli avversari non mancano, ma il figlio di Dylan Thomas (Danehill) , che vinse le King George nel 2007, rispetto a quello che hanno visto ad Ascot lo scorso anno è un altro cavallo. Completamente diverso. Di fisico, di testa. Di potenza. Non sono tanto le vittorie domestiche nel Premio del Jockey Club e nel Milano a farne aumentare le speranze. Ma le modalità di un cavallo molto progressivo che, a prescindere da quelli che ha battuto sinora, se la gioca alla grande.
