Dubai World Cup Starts Next Week
The finale of the Dubai World Cup Carnival is the Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline, and held on 28 March. This is the world’s richest race meeting and features nine high-class races highlighted by the US$10 million Dubai World Cup.
The Emirates Airline-sponsored Super Saturday on 7 March is held three weeks earlier and is a stand-out race meeting in its own right. It is traditionally regarded as the dress rehearsal for the Dubai World Cup.
Horses can often earn a coveted entry into a race on Dubai World Cup night after a good performance on Super Saturday. Its timing allows trainers to put the finishing touches to their equine stars before they take to racing’s biggest stage on Dubai World Cup day.
Since its inception the Dubai World Cup Carnival has served as a truly pioneering festival and has successfully attracted the brightest stars of the international racing scene including, South Africa, Great Britain, the United States of America, Japan, France, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Australia and Hong Kong to name a few.
De Sousa back for more
2014 Dubai World Cup winning jockey Silvestre de Sousa has emerged as a serious contender for the UAE jockey’s championship after riding an excellent four-timer at Jebel Ali racecourse last Friday.
The Brazilian ace landed three wins for retaining trainer Musabah Al Muhairi, including one aboard the mightily impressive Interpret in the featured Jebel Ali Stakes Prep sponsored by Shadwell, after he had won the opening HH Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum UAE Breeders Society Challenge for Purebred Arabians with the Saif Al Deeb-trained Dere’A Al Jazeera.
The towering performance catapulted De Sousa, who in March 2014 won the $10 million (Dh36.7 million) Dubai World Cup with African Story, into joint-second place on the jockey’s table with 18 wins, leaving him just three adrift of current leader Richard Mullen.
Royston French has also won 18 races this season.
