DONCASTER clerk of the course Roderick Duncan does not anticipate changing the going from the official description of soft for Saturday’s Racing Post Trophy card, with no rain forecast.
The going was altered to soft (from good to soft on the straight course and good to soft, soft in places on the round course), during racing on Friday, and Duncan defended his decision to only amend it after the fifth race, despite jockeys being of the opinion it was riding soft as early as the first race.

“Maybe I should have changed it earlier, but it clearly walked better than it rode,” Duncan said.
“If it has been a jumps meeting, I would have been tempted to call it good ground, the way it walked. The first four races were for two-year-olds and the jockeys said that it got softer as it was opened-up, so I changed after the old horses had run in the sprint handicap.”
Assessing the conditions for Saturday, Duncan added: “Even though no more rain is forecast, I don’t expect it to dry out much, so soft will be the description for Racing Post Trophy day.”
Dry conditions will be in Celestial Path’s favour, with Sir Mark Prescott debating whether to let his unbeaten juvenile run in the Racing Post Trophy.
Prescott said: “It depends what the ground is. He will run if I possibly could run him but if it is very soft I shan’t run. There are lots of horses on the improve but at the moment he should be thereabouts if we can run him.”
