Hamdan’s Muhaarar wins Gimcrack by a nose
Report: York, Saturday
Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes (Group 2) 6f, 2yo colts and geldings
SHEIKH HAMDAN enjoyed another juvenile Group success as the Charlie Hills-trained Muhaarar got the better of Mark Johnston’s consistent Jungle Cat in a photo-finish to the Gimcrack.

The owner’s famous blue and white silks have come home in front in plenty of two-year-old contests this term and the return to 6f helped Muhaarar win at 7-1 by a nose from the Silvestre de Sousa-ridden 9-2 shot. Ahlan Emarati finished third at 14-1 as 11-4 favourite Baitha Alga disappointed.
“He has always shown plenty and it is nice when it falls into place though,” said Hills. “It never really worked last time and Paul has given him a lovely ride today. He is growing up and is in plenty of the top class races for the rest of the year. The Middle Park will be his primary target.”

Betfred Melrose Stakes (Handicap) (Class 2) 1m6f, 3yo
THE Hughie Morrison-trained Vent De Force came with a late charge under Richard Kingscote to win a Melrose that finished in dramatic circumstances.
Four runners were contesting the finish when Joe Doyle’s saddle slipped on the Michael Bell-trained Mantou. The rider clung on until passing the post but eventually hit the turf. He limped away from the fall.
The 16-1 winner got the better 8-1 shot Adventure Seeker by three-quarters of a length, with 4-1 favourite Connecticut third and Kashmiri Sunset took fourth at 20-1 as Mantou was disqualified due to Doyle’s foot touching the ground before the post.
Kingscote said: “The pace wasn’t mad, but we went a proper gallop, which suits a horse like this. He was a little outpaced early, but turning in he was going well. I got a dream run through and he picked up with every gap that came.”

DAVID O’MEARA’S Custom Cut won his fourth consecutive race, and a third career Group 3, as he battled in gutsy fashion under Danny Tudhope to hold off the dual challenge of Trade Storm and Lady Lara.
Jumped off in front, the five-year-old tried to make all but looked like getting swamped as the field entered the final two furlongs. Several challengers looked to be coming with a run to get the better of him but he kept finding to win by a neck at odds of 11-2.
“He is as tough as you get,” said Tudhope. “He got headed and battled back again. We know how tough he is so we thought we would go and make it a test. You can’t ask for more than a horse that tries his heart out every time.”
