Unbeaten Dawn Approach is being aimed at Britain’s premier Classic, the Investec Derby, on June 1 following his stunning victory in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 4.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed and trainer Jim Bolger have agreed the Epsom Downs Classic is the right target for the brilliant three-year-old New Approach colt, despite some concerns about the mile and a half trip.

Jim Bolger said on the morning of May 6: “Dawn Approach has come out of the 2000 Guineas in excellent shape and I couldn’t be more pleased with him.

“I am now looking forward to running him in the Investec Derby at Epsom.”

Dawn Approach, Europe’s champion two-year-old of 2012, made his seasonal debut on Saturday in Britain’s first Classic, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas over a mile, and drew right away from his opponents in the final furlong to win by five lengths. His sire, also trained by Jim Bolger, won the Investec Derby in 2008.

Simon Crisford, Godolphin’s racing manager commented: “It has been agreed that Dawn Approach should run in the Investec Derby on June 1.

“His temperament and demeanour are excellent and he relaxes in his races which means he has a better chance of seeing out the mile and a half.”
