Almanzor storms clear late on to overhaul old rival Zarak

Almanzor cut for Arc following Group 2 win

PRIX DU JOCKEY CLUB winner Almanzor further enhanced his burgeoning reputation by confirming previous form with Zarak to land this Group 2 contest.

Jean-Claude Rouget’s son of Wootton Bassett, partnered by Jean-Bernard Eyquem, quickened up nicely inside the final furlong to beat Prix du Jockey Club second Zarak with John Gosden’s Royal Artlillery, ridden by Frankie Dettori, faring best of the British trio in third.

Sky Bet cut Almanzor to 10-1 (from 16) for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, while Coral halved the talented three-year-old to 8-1 (from 16) for the historic Group 1, which takes place in Chantilly this year with redevelopment taking place at Longchamp.

Heading to Ireland

Rouget described an Arc bid as “not out of the question” with a trip to Leopardstown for the Irish Champion Stakes next on the agenda for Almanzor.

Rouget said: “This horse has such great acceleration. It was the same result as the Prix du Jockey Club even though previously we had first run but here we had to come from behind. 

“The Irish Champion Stakes will be next and after that we’ll see. Ascot for the Champion Stakes is the favoured option but the Arc is not out of the question.”

How it panned out

Dettori set only an even gallop aboard recent Betfred Rose of Lancaster Stakes victor Royal Artillery though made a bid for glory turning into the straight.

However, Christophe Soumillon had Dettori’s move covered on board Zarak, who breezed to the lead with just over a furlong to run, but Almanzor showed a blistering turn of foot to lead in the closing stages to run out a length winner.

Richard Hannon’s Steel Of Madrid outran his odds to finish fifth under Stephane Pasquier though William Haggas’s Sky Kingdom struggled on his first attempt in Group 2 company, finishing eighth of nine.

Deauville: Prix Gontaut-Biron Hong Kong Jockey Club (Group 3), 1m2f, 4yo+

Last year’s Prix du Jockey Club winner and Arc third New Bay bounced back to form with a facile success in the Group 3 event.

Andre Fabre’s four-year-old disappointed on his return in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan on heavy ground at Chantilly in May though breezed to victory under a hands and heels ride from Vincent Cheminaud – yet Paddy Power remain unchanged offering 16-1 about New Bay winning the Arc this campaign.

James Fanshawe’s Arthenus ran the best race of his career from the front to finish a game second under Pierre-Charles Boudot.

Deauville: Prix De Lieurey (Group 3), 1m, 3yo fillies

Olivier Peslier and Alain de Royer-Dupre teamed up to land the £29,412 first prize with Trixia edging past Chartreuse in a tight finish.

The daughter of Siyouni gained her second Group 3 success at the track by a nose – with the pair of British raiders finishing outside the prize money.

Charlie Appleby’s Mise En Rose stayed on in the closing stages to finish eighth under William Buick while the Richard Hannon-trained Light Up Our World, ridden by Pat Dobbs, raced prominently before being eased inside the final furlong when well beaten.
